Shaping the Next EU Agenda for Cities: Smart Cities, Sustainable Goals, and the Rise of Autonomous Cars
On 2 July 2025, policymakers, urban-development specialists, and mobility innovators gathered in the MEP Salon of the European Parliament for an invitation-only working lunch on the future of the EU’s Urban Agenda. With cities playing an increasingly central role in Europe’s green and digital transitions, the discussion focused on how smart city strategies, sustainability goals, and autonomous mobility can shape the next phase of EU urban policy.
Participants examined how emerging mobility solutions — including autonomous vehicles, data-driven transport systems, and platform-based services — can support greener, more efficient, and more connected urban environments across Europe. The debate further highlighted the need for EU frameworks that promote innovation, ensure safety and consumer protection, and strengthen SME involvement in urban transformation.
The gathering brought together representatives from political institutions, city networks, foundations, research organisations, and the mobility industry, enabling a broad exchange of perspectives on innovation-led urban development.
Overall, the session offered a timely opportunity to reflect on how the renewed Urban Agenda can become more inclusive, forward-looking, and capable of supporting Europe’s cities as they transition toward smart, sustainable, and innovation-friendly urban environments.
