SMEs and the Safe Hearts Plan:
Towards Affordable, Heart-Friendly Diets

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of mortality in the European Union, making prevention a key public health priority. The European Commission’s Safe Hearts Plan and the European Parliament’s Cardiovascular Diseases Strategy highlight healthier diets as a central lever to reduce cardiovascular risk. This webinar will explore how evidence-based nutrition goals can be delivered through food systems that are affordable and sustainable for European consumers. Drawing on research on nutrient density and diet affordability, the discussion will examine the practical trade-offs facing policymakers and the food sector. Particular attention will be given to the role of SMEs in developing accessible, nutrient-dense solutions that support Europe’s cardiovascular prevention objectives.
