Personalized Prevention:
Harnessing Science, Technology, and Smarter Nutrition for a Healthier Europe
Europe is entering a new era of health and prevention. Scientific and technological development is opening new opportunities to reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and obesity, while promoting healthier and longer lives through more precise, adaptive and individualized prevention strategies.
Advances in genomics, epigenetics, biomarker analysis, microbiome research, artificial intelligence, wearable devices and digital health technologies are transforming our understanding of human health. These developments are opening new pathways for personalized prevention: an approach that uses scientific knowledge, data and innovation to support more precise, adaptive and citizen-centred strategies for health promotion and disease prevention.
Personalized nutrition is among the most promising applications. By combining nutritional science, biomarkers, microbiome research, digital monitoring and lifestyle data, it can help move beyond generic recommendations toward smarter and more adaptive strategies, with the potential to improve adherence and long-term health outcomes.
The European Union is well positioned to advance this transformation through initiatives including the European Health Data Space, the Digital Health agenda, the European Cardiovascular Health Plan, Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and broader efforts to promote healthy ageing and reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases.
This event will bring together policymakers, scientists, healthcare professionals, innovators, patient representatives and industry stakeholders to discuss how personalized prevention can improve health outcomes, enhance quality of life, reduce long-term pressure on healthcare systems and empower citizens to take a more active role in managing their health.
The discussion will also consider the ethical, regulatory and social implications of artificial intelligence and sensitive health data, including privacy, accessibility, citizen trust and the risk of widening inequalities. Ensuring that innovation remains trustworthy, inclusive and aligned with European values will be essential.
